A luxury hotel on the Chatsworth Estate has recently undergone more than a modern makeover, mixing antique and contemporary furnishings to great effect.
With an eclectic mix of both modern and traditional, a London designer has totally transformed ten bedrooms of the Cavendish Hotel in Baslow, with up close and personal attention paid by the Duchess of Devonshire along the way.
Using a gracefully refined style, Melissa Wyndham has produced the refurbished bedrooms, which are relaxed, comfortable and understated. Mixing contemporary and a style of a former time period, with antique items in each room sourced personally by the Duke and Duchess, some bedrooms even have items borrowed on permanent loan from Chatsworth House.
'We wanted this recent transformation to remain in keeping with the rest of the hotel,' explains Philip Joseph, General Manager for the Cavendish and Managing Director of Peak Leisure Management. 'There haven't been any actual structural changes, but in redesigning the interiors, our main aim was to keep to the ethos and tranquillity of our country style setting.'
Based in Chelsea, London, Melissa Wyndham has long been recognised as one of the UK's top interior decorators.
'Having worked in many of Britain's most beautiful houses, Melissa is renowned for her versatile style of interior design and the rooms are simply stunning because of it,' continues Philip. 'The Duchess of Devonshire has been involved from the beginning, working very closely with Melissa while she redesigned the ten rooms of the Devonshire Wing, choosing all the furnishings, fixtures and fittings.' The Duke has also been very involved, sourcing all the artwork for the bedrooms.
Every year since 2009 the hotel has undergone upgrading and redecoration, whilst preserving the traditional atmosphere of this beautiful old building. Acquired from the Duke of Rutland for the Devonshire Family in 1830, the modern day Cavendish Hotel is renowned for its enviable location, its elegant rooms and magnificent views of the Chatsworth Estate.
Using the same pale green heritage colours from the Farrow and Ball paint range in each bedroom, the rest of the decor differs in all ten, each having its own unique personality and style. With modern day fixings chosen sympathetically to blend in with new and antique, the Devonshire Wing has beautiful bespoke furniture, wardrobes which blend into the walls, writing desks and bed side tables from Chatsworth with a story to tell all of their own, a high speed Wi Fi connection - and of course - THAT view, transporting guests of The Cavendish directly into the countryside from the comfort of their room.
With the light and airy Garden Room to while away the afternoon, enjoying afternoon teas with homemade scones and jam, the Gallery Restaurant serves locally sourced highly acclaimed food made from the freshest possible ingredients. The brand new Devonshire Wing complements the rest of the hotel perfectly, adding another reason to choose this luxury hotel as a perfect rural retreat and country escape.
