Unsurprisingly the hills and dales of the Peak District are dotted with farms, farm buildings and barns as this rural idyll in the heart of England has a history of agriculture dating back to prehistoric times.
Traditional farming practises are still maintained and you are guaranteed to see fields containing cattle and sheep as you drive around the National Park. However, methods of farming have changed considerably in the last half century leaving many small farm buildings and barns redundant for agricultural use. Many barns are constructed of solid stone such as limestone or gritstone which would have been sourced and quarried locally. Some barns have even kept their traditional stone flagged floors and stone slab roofs, but most now incorporate central heating and even log fires to make the interiors warm and inviting.
