Things To Do In The Peak District
With so many things to do in the Peak District where do you start? Look no further than our A-Z guide which should point you in the right direction, inspire you with ideas, provide you with contact details and open your eyes to just how exciting the Peak District can be.
Derbyshire is steeped in traditions and customs such as village Well Dressing ceremonies and Wakes Weeks, but be sure to read through Events in the Peak which lists galas, festivals, exhibitions, shows, performances and productions that are taking place throughout the year.
For all manner of outdoor pursuits including boating & sailing, rock climbing and cycling in the Peak District, even Peak District Shooting we have plenty of helpful advice and a few ideas to get you underway.
Why not take to the skies with Balloon Rides, Helicopter Rides or try Gliding the Peak District and soar like a bird over the National Park. Talking of birds – do you want to know where to find the best Bird Watching Sites in the Peak District, we do and are happy to tell you!
For those interested in a more leisurely sport such as Cricket, Horse Racing, or simply admiring the wondrous landscape whilst gently Walking in the Peak District, we can point you in the right direction and tell you more.
Rivers in the Peak District are amongst the purest in the country but we also have lakes, reservoirs and Carsington Water which provide angling and coarse Fishing in the Peak District. Little wonder that the 17th century book entitled The Compleat Angler was written about our famous River Dove by Charles Cotton and Izaak Walton - it is now thought of as the fisherman’s Bible.
The rivers also featured strongly in the construction of Mills in the Peak creating a rich heritage of industrial and social history that is readily described and detailed in Peak District Museums. We have also listed some of the Peak District Curiosities which can be found hidden away in the countryside, tucked away in towns or buried away in backstreets.
Working Peak District Railways are few and far between after long stretches of track were closed in the 1960’s, but the Peak District has a passion for old trains, rolling stock, trams and vintage machines with museums, exhibitions and even the opportunity to travel on a steam train once again.
The Peak District has so much to offer all the family with Peak District Childrens Activities and Peak District Attractions that will provide fun and entertainment for all ages. For Team Building Courses there are Peak Group Activities and Leisure Centres ideal for a healthy work-out or team sport challenge.
For budding geologists or rock and mineral collectors, the Peak District contains a wealth of interest and a ‘mine’ of information. Fossil Hunting in the Peak District is a popular pursuit with one form of crinoid being so abundant that it has been named the Derbyshire Lily, but it is our Blue John from Castleton that is uniquely famous and found nowhere else in the world.
The Peak District is packed with Country Houses from an above average ‘des res’ to a stately home with a few Halls of fame and the odd Castle or two for good measure. If you enjoy seeking out Historic Houses and Open Gardens, the Peak District is sure to satisfy, and for home and garden maintenance we have created the Peak Gardening section just for you.
