Peak Food

Food, glorious Food! Peak food is revered for its quality, taste and appetising appearance. After one bowl or platter of Peak Food you will be asking for more just like Oliver Twist, only it wont be gruel that whets your appetite! Here in the Peak District we have flavours to savour, but where do you go to find these tempting morsels and culinary delights. Simply browse through our listings or Peak Food to find the best butchers, bakers, confectioners, caterers, producers and retailers. We can even provide you with a few traditional recipes to test your culinary skills. Peak Food includes meat from cattle and sheep which have grazed on limestone pasture or heather-clad moors and drunk from springs or streams of crystal clear water, rich in natural minerals which has permeated down from the highest peaks so good that its bottled and sold all around the country. Peak District folk enjoy quality food and home-made produce including pasties, pies, puddings and pastries with recipes handed down through the centuries offering traditional good fare. You can find butchers, bakers, confectioners and cottage industries around the Peak District continuously working to produce nourishing and wholesome Peak Food. Retailers and providers of Peak Food consider it important to include as many local ingredients as possible, buying direct from local producers to keep food miles to a minimum. Farmers Markets are regularly held around the Peak District at a variety of locations and there are also Farmers Market shops open most days, all of which are stocked with a rich variety of local produce. Peak District meat is a valuable ingredient of Peak Foods, and you may well see displays of beef from Highland cattle, rare breed lamb, pork and poultry alongside the more traditional meats, which have been naturally reared in the Derbyshire Dales or the rich meadows of the White Peak. Even more unusual meat is on offer through The Farmhouse Pantry in Dronfield as part of Peak Food, including Peak District Water Buffalo, Wild Boar, kangaroo, partridge and venison. Organic farming is increasing in interest and demand, with some farms offering Peak Food from their own Farm Shops where the meat has been reared using organic farming methods, before being butchered and sold on the premises an impressive saving on food miles! Peak District meat is used by butchers and bakers to make pies and pasties, haggis and haslet, black puddings and an assortment of flavoured sausages which are temptingly tasty Peak District food. Delicatessens can be found in most large towns and villages around the Peak District, offering even more choice and variety of Peak District Food. There is a rich assortment of savouries and snacks, delicacies and delicious ready meals to be found. Patrick & Brooksbank at Ashbourne claim to make food you would love to make yourself if only you had the time! Peak Food also comes sugar-coated, sweet and satisfying Derbyshire folk appreciate comfort food! We have recipes which have stood the test of time and many a taste bud and are still in high demand. The Bakewell Pudding is a classic example, with visitors to Bakewell desperate to know the secret ingredient. The Old Original Pudding Shop in Bakewell dates from the 17th century and offers an evening Bakehouse Tour with the chance to make your own pudding for diners who can eat a meal whilst their Pudding cooks! Peak District Food also includes hand made fudge traditionally cooked in Victorian pans, freshly made marzipan, nougat and old fashioned sweets. You can also find indulgent chocolates with fresh ingredients and natural colourings made by Peak District Confectioners a luxury to be savoured throughout the year and not just for birthdays or special occasions. With all this wonderful Peak Food on offer you might want to plan a party. Simply browse through the listings to find details of Outside Caterers who can provide Peak Cuisine and Peak District Fine Foods for your guests. Food glorious food, hot sausage and mustard. Food glorious food, cold jelly and custard! At one time these lines from the musical Oliver may well have been mouth-watering, but it is not until you have sampled Peak Food that you will appreciate the true meaning of: Food, wonderful food, marvellous food, glorious food!! Food in the Peak District is vast and varied you will find a wealth of locally produced food, which includes organic meat, delicious breads, ice creams, Preserves, Confectionary, cheeses, Fruit, Vegetables and Herbs.
