Hotels In Castleton

Castleton nestles in an amphitheatre of hills, each steeped in history and having a story to tell. Lose Hill and Win Hill for example were named after a battle more than 1300 years ago between Edwin, King of Northumbria and the united armies of Wessex and Mercia, whilst Mam Tor (the Mother Hill or Shivering Mountain) has a more recent tale of subsidence and erosion that permanently closed the main road down into the village.

If you stay in a hotel in Castleton you can learn about the numerous traditions, customs and annual events for which Castleton has become famed. Where else will you find a Garland Ceremony held on Oak Apple Day or the ancient practise of ringing a curfew bell?

Some hotels in Castleton are traditional, their names conjuring up a roaring log fire and yards of ale, such as Ye Old Cheshire Cheese or Ye Old Nags Head.
The Castle Hotel in Castleton sits beneath the promontory rock on top of which stands Peveril Castle, a 12th century impregnable fortress and seat of William Peverill, later used as a hunting lodge by royalty and noblemen visiting the Royal Forest of the Peak, but is now owned by English Heritage and open to the public.

Hotels in Castleton are rambler friendly and quite used to muddy boots and soggy rucksacks, as this is hill walking countryside with some of the most spectacular scenery and far-reaching views you are likely to find in the Peak District .

Your stay in a hotel in Castleton would not be complete without a visit to one of several local caverns. Whether you descend flights of steps into the darkness, travel by underground boat to visit the bottomless pit or see at close hand the exclusive ‘Blue John’ mine, there is something to test any budding mineralogist.

Tea rooms and coffee shops can be found down every little side street, with some of the hotels in Castleton offering more wholesome tucker including an ‘eat all you can’ Sunday Carvery.

To find the most suitable accommodation for your visit, here is a list of some of the best hotels in Castleton to help you.
