The old spa town of Buxton must surely rate as the cultural capital of the Peak District as here you can find a wonderful Museum brimful with locally sourced artefacts, antiquities and artwork, whilst down near the Crescent – a Georgian masterpiece to rival Bath - sits the Buxton Opera House – a surviving golden gem of a theatre which brings to Derbyshire a rich variety of acts and performances. And to top it all, the streets, parks, church halls and any available function room become packed when the Buxton Festival Fringe comes to town in July! There have been hotels in Buxton for centuries – the Old Hall Hotel boasts to being the oldest hotel in England, having played mine host to Mary Queen of Scots. Daniel Defoe also stayed in a hotel in Buxton in 1727 and afterwards wrote “this is indeed a very special place”. Buxton may be steeped in history and the hotels in Buxton may ooze charm and character, but they are not stuck in the dark ages, many of the hotels in Buxton can now offer modern technology and up-to-date facilities for their guests to cater for businessmen and even conferences. Way back in 78AD the Romans came to Buxton to discover liquid gold in the form of thermal waters in which to bath their weary feet after marching for miles along Roman Roads. Aquae Arnametiae was the Roman name they gave to the town. The thermal baths are now dried up but St Anne’s Well is still flowing strong. Buxton Water has been bottled for many years and is available at most of the hotels in Buxton. To stay at a hotel in Buxton offers not only comfort and culture, but will put you on the threshold of some fantastic Peak District scenery where you can enjoy walking, cycling, caving and rock climbing.
