Peak District Fishing - Fly Fishing – Magic May?
The month of May is a highlight in the Fly fisher’s calendar as waterborne flies start to emerge in ever increasing numbers. The Mayfly (Ephemera Vulgata & Danica) puts in an appearance any time from mid May to mid June and we enter a period classed as “the cream of fly fishing time”. The price of Day Tickets on the prime fisheries also starts to emerge in increasing numbers. The Mayfly time is short and unpredictable so if you intend to treat yourself be prepared for high ticket prices with no guarantees. Take a...

Peak District Fishing - Peter Lax - Derbyshire
Snow and then rain have helped to boost water levels in both the rivers and lake here in the Peak District.   The Wye was looking good yesterday when I was with a client at Monsal Dale although there was just a tinge of colour which slowed down the Olive hatch meaning we fished nymphs more than we would have liked.   Let's hope that levels remain good from now.   Talking of levels, the reservoirs have received a welcome boost from recent snow and rain and most are now at, or very near maximum, and let's hope trend...

Peak District Fishing - The Brilliant Klinkhammer.
I cannot remember the last time I had a days fishing with a Klinkhammer and didn't have a fish rise to my fly. This revolutionary fly was invented by Hans van Klinken in 1984. Hanns was fishing the Glomma river in Norway, chasing the huge Graying that the river is renowned for. Hans was trying to imitate the shape of the Caddis which he had observed when cleaning Grayling for the pot. From experience fishing the river, he knew that fish liked taking insects in the surface film in the fast runs so his thinking was to design his fly so half sat...

Peak District Fishing - Leap Year Day at Ladybower Fisheries
Leap Year Day saw me looking over the wall at Ladybower Fishery which opens this weekend - members only on the 1st and 2nd March and the general Fishing Public on the 3rd. March.   Traditionally an early opening water this year finds it full again after a very low water period last year although the lack of recent rains even here in the High Peak, normally a pretty wet area, could spell level problems again this year.   Hope I am wrong.   The weather is unseasonably warm for the time of year and there is every...

Leap Year Day at Ladybower Fisheries
Ladybower reservoir, in the heart of the Peak District Natioanl Park is one of the most stunning fly fishing venues in the UK. Built in the late 1930's  by flooding the villages of Ashopton and Derwent, Ladybower's water is supplied by the rivers Derwent and Ashopton which flow in to the reservoir. Opening day for fly fishing is the 1st March for season ticket holders and the 3rd of March for day tickets. This extensive water can be fished either from the bank or by boats which are available to hire from the ticket office. Early...

Ladybower Prepares For Opening Day 2012
Of all the places to fish, the river will always be closest to many anglers’ hearts.   Whilst on the still water or pond one can catch the same fish all year, on the river who knows what monster has slipped upstream during the recent high water!   The Derbyshire Derwent flows for half of its 66 mile course through the Peak District and many of these miles are rural and very beautiful. From its source high up near Bleaklow, the Derwent flows through the famous Derwent valley with it's large reservoirs; Howden, Derwent...

Peak District Fishing - February Blog by Philip White
Bright sunshine today saw me on the banks of the river Derwent talking to a friend who fishes there.   It was great to see some water in the river again after the extreme low levels of 2011, even if it is still only about normal summer level.   I am hoping for some decent rains this month - 'February Filldyke'  as an old friend used to call it - for without them we will be desperate for water in the coming summer, both for our fishing and, some would say even more importantly, for general domestic use.  ...

Fancy learning the art of fly fishing?
Wet and dry fly fishing opened Sunday 4th September at the new fishing lake at Peak District Spa. Excavation of the lake and the installation of the pond liner was completed last autumn with aquatic plants and fish allowed to settle in over the summer. About an acre in size, the lake is ideal for beginners learning to cast - or more experienced anglers wanting to polish “rusty” casting technique before tackling the renowned limestone rivers nearby such as the Dove, Manifold and Wye where the casting is considerably more...

July has been just as dry as the preceding months, with fishing getting harder and harder during the day on all the waters.   Fly hatches are sparse until the evenings but a sedge fished on the surface has picked off fish on the Wye and Press manor for various clients during the month.   Montana nymph is a favourite with regulars at Press, fished deep for fish feeding on the sloping stone clad sides, probably on snails or cased caddis but I prefer to get the beginners going with a dry fly.   Sedge patterns like...

Peak District Fishing - Philip White - Mayfly Hatch
Last time I raised hopes by mentioning the immanent Mayfly hatch.   Well, sadly this was a bit of a 'damp squib' this year pretty well throughout the Derbyshire area.   Most of the waters saw only sporadic hatches and these only lasted about a week or so.   Probably low water conditions have had a part to play in this and it is interesting to hear from more than one source that these flies have made a second appearance this month, so local and visiting anglers could do worse than make sure that they have a mayfly...

Philip White - Mayfly Hatch
I have recently been to visit a newly available stretch of the Dove near Hartington.   This is the Beresford Dale beat which has on its banks the historic Walton/Cotton stone built fishing hut often referred to as the 'Temple'.  It is certainly unique as fishing rooms go and quite something to see.  The water is typical of the upper middle Dove with a mixed habitat of runs and pools for the resident brown trout and it fished dry fly and nymph.    I had a couple of hours myself and took three nicely...

Peak District Fishing - Philip White - blog 17th May, 2011
The first two weeks in May have seen me both on the local stillwaters and the rivers again with visits to the Wye at Rowsley and Monsal Dale.   With the water levels very low and the weather patterns somewhat strange for this time of year, fishing is a little patchy at times but all my clients have caught fish.   Fly hatches are very sporadic at the moment and the fish have seemed preoccupied with aphids, of which there are simply thousands on the water this year with the stiff breezes knocking them off the...

Peak District Fishing - Philip White - blog 30th April 2011
April has seen me spending some time on the river Wye, both at Monsal Dale as well as lower down on the Peacock at Rowsley water.   As is normal for this time of year the main activity was around lunchtime with fish rising to sporadic hatches of small olives, with sport easing off by around 3.30pm meaning a relatively short fishing day for those using the dry fly.   Others who fished nymphs at Monsal caught more fish, which are more active sub-surface at this time of year.   Indeed, it was clear from...

Philip White - blog 30th April 2011
A bright sunny start to the season at Carsington saw every boat out on the water early.   There was a cold wind coming off the dam wall and this coupled with the bright sun will probably keep the fish fairly near the bottom in the shallower parts of the reservoir which is pretty normal on this water.   A number of limit bags were reported by lunchtime with a good showing of brownies amongst the fish caught.   It is too early to say what methods are best but buzzer fishing is always productive at this...

A Good Showing of Brownies at Carsington
The 18th March sees the river fly fishing season open on many waters, although some prefer to start a little later at the beginning of April.   I drove up to Buxton today passing along the river Wye in the process.  There was a good number of rods out for their first cast of the season in absolutely glorious sunny weather, even though it was a little cool in the Northerly breeze.   I did not stop as I was aiming for Errwood Reservoir at the head of the Goyte valley, just beyond Buxton.   The water level in...

Peak District Fishing - Dreaming of better weather to come
Another week that has started with foul weather affecting the rivers and any sensible chances of fly fishing.   Still that does not mean there is nothing to do.   Will be giving a talk and fly tying demo to Derby County Angling Club tonight.   This is one of the strongest Fishing clubs around and it has a wealth of waters for all fishing interests, be it coarse, trout or salmon.   It is a club that even visiting anglers could consider if they are regularly in the Peak District, especially with the cost...

Peak District Fishing - Spring is Round the Corner
Crocus and Snowdrops are blooming in my front garden, a timely reminder that spring is just around the corner, even if more snow is ‘promised’ for the next few days. This tells me that I must get on with two things immediately. The first is to plan at least one trip after the ‘lady of the stream’, the grayling, before the coarse fishing season ends in mid March. Actually, this was planned for today but when I arrived the Dove was pushing through and quite coloured so I took the camera for a walk instead. ...
