Wet and dry fly fishing opened Sunday 4th September at the new fishing lake at Peak District Spa. Excavation of the lake and the installation of the pond liner was completed last autumn with aquatic plants and fish allowed to settle in over the summer.
About an acre in size, the lake is ideal for beginners learning to cast - or more experienced anglers wanting to polish “rusty” casting technique before tackling the renowned limestone rivers nearby such as the Dove, Manifold and Wye where the casting is considerably more challenging. It will also be favoured by anglers who do not like boat fishing (either due to cost or an aversion to being afloat) and those who simply want a good chance of catching fish, unlike a larger water where choice of tactics and location is more crucial to success. However, whilst casting is relatively easy and the evening rise prolific, the clarity of the water still requires stealth and good fly presentation - the perfect introduction to the fly fishing skills required to explore the areas premium lakes and rivers.
Fishing is available all year, initially exclusively for rainbow trout, but with the prospect of other fly-taking species of fish being added as the lake matures. Prices for a half day with a 2 fish bag are £9, a full day 4 fish bag is £17. Free parking is provided about 350 metres from the lake near the café, there is also a restaurant, pub and disabled facility on site – but please note these are 300 metres from the lake across a field. The latter is negotiable by a four wheel drive vehicle all year and 2 wheel drive vehicles unless there has been heavy rain.
To welcome angling guests to the new lake, all 2 night bookings between Sunday and Thursday nights inclusive during September will benefit from a free half day fly fishing ticket at Peak District Spa. Tel (01335) 310100 for more information.
