Holiday Cottages In Cressbrook
Cressbrook is a gem or a Peak District village, set in sylvan beauty where quaint little cottages rise up the steep sided Dale, peeping out from the trees, and looking down onto the fabulous Cressbrook Mill which at one time provided employment for men, women and children.
Years ago, the woods around Cressbrook were harvested for their crop of lilies of the valley which were transported and sold at Manchester market. Peppermint, lavender and other aromatic herbs were also grown then distilled at a mill by the river.
In 1815 an impressive 12-bay Georgian cotton mill was erected by William Newton which transformed the valley and provided much needed employment. Unlike Litton Mill upstream, the conditions at Cressbrook were exceptionally good with workers well provided for and not over exploited.
A holiday cottage in Cressbrook will provide you with some of the most picturesque riverside walks in the whole of the Peak District . Water-cum-Jolly is particularly beautiful, being a wide stretch of water above the mill weir, where ducks, dab chick and the occasional swan glide over reflections of the wooded slopes and miniature limestone cliffs.
Standing guard over the valley is Cressbrook Hall which sits high on the hilltops in a commanding position. There is a selection of well appointed holiday cottages in Cressbrook to be found at the Hall which you can read about below.
A walk up through the woods from your holiday cottages in Cressbrook will take you past the isolated Ravensdale Cottages which look like something from a film set and are unbelievably pretty.
Cressbrook Dale is noted for its wonderful assortment of wild flowers, with banks of orchids and cowslips in a pastel haze of colour. Be sure to bring along your nature books when staying at a holiday cottage in Cressbrook to look up the flowers, fauna and birds you might see.
The Monsal Trail runs right through the heart of Cressbrook. It must have been an amazing sight when a steam train puffed its way through the valley. The line was closed back in 1968, but bring along your bikes when staying at a holiday cottage in Cressbrook to take advantage of the trail – its pedal power now!
