Holiday Cottages In Longnor

Longnor was once an important market town on a par with Leek and Bakewell. The markets have now ceased, but the cobbled market place and Victorian Market Hall remain, and there is still a plaque to advise what the tariffs were a hundred or so years ago.
Longnor was also an estate village of the Harpur Crewe family, whose name lives on in one of four hostelries to be found here. It could be that amongst the holiday cottages in Longnor are some former estate workers cottages.
From any of the holiday cottages in Longnor you will have the chance to explore some of the Peak District’s most fascinating landscapes. To the east lie the limestone reef knolls of Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill, whilst away to the west are the Staffordshire Moorlands and a gritstone escarpment known as The Roaches.

Should you prefer a short walk whilst staying at one of the holiday cottages in Longnor, then a tour of the village can be recommended to see character properties and interesting architecture. You may also wish to visit the church dedicated to St Bartholomew where you can find the gravestone of William Billinge who it records was born in a nearby cornfield and fought in various battles before dying just a few hundred yards from his birthplace at the grand old age of 112!
Whilst staying at one of the holiday cottages in Longnor you may find reference to the village claim to fame – in 1972 the village featured in a television documentary when the whole community gave up smoking for one week, and no cigarettes or tobacco could be purchased locally. With the latest restrictions, this would hardly rate as even minor news now!

Longnor
is a friendly little village which still retains its village shop as well as a tea room and craft centre, but best of all there is a local ‘chippie’ which serves up scrumptious fish and chips – not a bad idea for an evening meal one night whilst staying atholiday cottages in Longnor.
Should your stay at one of the holiday cottages in Longnor be at the start of September, you may wish to watch the local Harness Races where trotting ponies followed by motocross bikes are driven around a track laid out over a couple of local fields. Fast, furious and frenzied it is great fun to watch! However, no matter what date you stay in holiday cottages in Longnor, you are guaranteed an action packed holiday with walks and cycle routes on your doorstep and countless activities just a short drive away.
