Monyash has all the hallmarks of a typical English village with a mere, village green and an old market cross. It stands sheltered in a hollow surrounded by the rolling fields of the White Peak at a junction of many ancient paths, tracks and roads.
A couple of centuries ago, Monyash prospered as one of the lead mining capitals of Derbyshire, and some of the holiday cottages in Monyash were built at that time for miners and their families. The Great Barmote Court of the High Peak lead mining area was held at the local pub (The Bulls Head) when the Steward or Barmaster represented the Crown and his word was law. Lead Mining died out 100 or so years ago with farming and agriculture now being the main occupation, but The Bulls Head has prospered.
