Holiday Cottages In Winster
Winster is a tightly packed village of quaint little cottages and fascinating houses, many of which are ‘listed’ and all of which ooze charm and character. Although there are several holiday cottages in Winster, many of the properties remain occupied by residents who pride themselves on a strong community spirit, but welcome visitors amongst their midst.
Sticking out into the main village street is the former market hall which dates back to the 16th century and is famed for being the first acquisition of the National Trust back in 1906.
Winster Hall has a sad tale to tell. In the mid 18th century the daughter of the house fell in love with the coachman - an unacceptable tryst at that time. Her parents tried to arrange a more suitable partner, but on the eve of the wedding the true lovers jumped to their deaths from the rooftop, and their ghosts are now said to haunt the Hall! Winster is surrounded by old miners’ tracks and pathways, as this was a lead mining capital in the 18th and 19th centuries. The lead mines have been closed and capped, but your stay at a holiday cottage in Winster will be sure to educate you on what riches the lead mining era provided.
