Youlgreave may well be the name on the map, but it’s Youlgrave or ‘Pommy’ to the residents of this traditional Derbyshire village which has managed to retain its village shop, post office and a healthy community spirit.
Taking pride of place is the wonderful church which stands at the head of the main street, surrounded by fine 18th century houses and little cottages full of charm and character.
Within walking distance of your holiday cottage in Youlgrave you will find yourself in either the Lathkill Dale or the Bradford Dale, being staunch rivals in a bid to be the prettiest of the Derbyshire Dales. Listed under holiday cottages in Youlgrave you will find customary village cottages with ‘roses around the door’ appeal, old oak beams and wood burning stoves. However, Chapel Cottage at Middleton-by-Youlgrave, a mile or so away, is something different. Originally the Ministers residence, this grade II listed property is of historical interest and is located close to the tomb of Sir Thomas Bateman – a notable Victorian archaeologist whose finds are displayed in the Weston Park museums in Sheffield.
Thimble Cottage is a holiday cottage in Youlgrave which looks out onto Fountain Square which holds a large stone tank dated 1829. Built by the village’s own water company for all who paid sixpence annually for its supply, it held 1200 gallons of water and was fed from springs rising in Bleakley Woods.

You may wish to book a holiday cottage in Youlgrave to coincide with the annual village pantomime which takes place at the end of January, beginning of February. The costumes are spectacular, the storylines unique and the acting by adults and children of the village are often far from being amateur.
Bakewell with its shops, restaurants and leisure facilities is only a short drive from your holiday cottage in Youlgrave, but be sure to try out the village butchers who sell exceptionally tasty tucker!
