Longnor

Walk Posted on 28 Oct 2011

Start at: Longnor . Grid ref: SK 088 649 . Difficulty: Easy . Distance: 8 km .

From the car park in the centre of Longnor head out of the village on the road towards Crowdecote and keep left when the road forks. Ignore the track to Gosselcroft but take the next track on the right and descend towards Bridge End Farm and the river.

Cross the River Dove and turn right as you approach the farm to follow a path along the Crowdecote to Hartington ridge. The path now runs parallel to the river below, on the right, crossing several fields until the river starts to curve right. Carry straight on at this point with Pilsbury Castle below to the end of the embankment where a stile crosses the wall.

Turn right here and with the wall on the left as a handrail head towards Pilsbury to meet the road. Turn right, along the road, for the short walk to, and through, Pilsbury then as you leave the hamlet take the path off to the right. The path now drops to a footbridge where it crosses the River Dove before passing woods on the right and emerging on the Longnor to Hulme End road. Turn right here, cross the road and take the road on the left to climb uphill for about 800 metres.

A path on the right leads to Hill End Farm, which you pass through to follow the wall on your right down to the trees and a stream. Cross the stream and keeping the trees on your left head uphill then downhill to again reach the road.  Turn right at the road then left to take a path downhill to a stream. Cross the stream and follow the wall on the left to Lower Boothlow Farm.

Pass the farm and turn right using the wall on the right as a guide as you walk parallel to the River Manifold go through the first field, then making the enclosure at the far end of the next field your target. The third field brings you to a wide track, with Upper Boothlow to the right, but continue ahead here, slowly getting closer to the river. The path now follows the river, ignoring the track on the right, curving left before straightening as it approaches a wall. Cross the next field diagonally to the left to join the well-used path back into Longnor.
