Casterne Hall - Ilam, nr Ashbourne

    Experience the thrill of staying in this celebrated Grade II* manor house, home to the Hurt family for 500 years. Set in its own grounds, and with stunning views of the Manifold Valley, Casterne is at the centre of some of the most beautiful walking country in the whole of Britain, with several footpaths leading literally from the doorstep. (Mapped routes by owner, Charles Hurt, author of ‘On Foot in the Peak District’, are available.) Ilam village and Dovedale are only a mile and a half away.

    Guests will have exclusive access to the entire top floor suite contisting of two double bedrooms, two twin bedrooms, a bath with hand held shower, and a huge livingroom with kitchenette, dining table, woodburner, multi channel tv, games and DVd's .All bedrooms are furnished to the highest standards of taste and elegance. You can book as many or as few rooms as you wish ( minimum of 6 people at weekends ) . For larger parties there is another double room , another single room and additional bathroom on the floor below . For an additional charge, a hearty, full-English breakfast with, whenever possible, our own free range eggs and home-made bread, marmalade and jams are served each morning, and, in the evening, a superb three-course dinner, with a vegetarian option, cooked by professionally-trained Caroline Hurt may be ordered. Ingredients are locally-sourced with a strong emphasis on organic and seasonal produce, often from our own kitchen garden. There are also home made oven ready meals available. Alternatively the multi-award winning ‘George’ pub and restaurant is only a 10 minute drive away, and the pubs and restaurants of the delightful market town of Ashbourne only quarter of an hour.

     Guests also have access to the sunny terrace and garden and extensive grounds by arrangement.Use of the more formal downstairs rooms can be negotiated by arrangement.

    Casterne is surrounded by the wonderful countryside of the Peak District, the Derbyshire Dales and the Staffordshire Moorlands. Many famous and exciting places to visit are within easy distance, including Alton Towers Adventure Park, and great houses such as Chatsworth, Kedleston, Haddon, Sudbury, Calke, and Hardwick. Almost every form of recreation can be found nearby, from sailing on Carsington Water to golf, clay pigeon shooting, and tennis. To the north lie the market towns of Bakewell and Matlock, to the south the cathedral city of Lichfield, and to the west is Leek, famous as a centre of the antique business.

    All bedrooms have tea and coffee making facilities.

    Bicycles welcome. There are superb routes from the house.

    Horses are welcome by prior arrangement and can be stabled overnight. This is fabulous riding country.

    Weddings at Casterne Hall .

    A wedding at Casterne will impress your guests for a long time to come.

    We have a license which can accommodate up to 70 guests for your reception which would be held in the beautiful and historic Main Hall, Drawing Room and Oak Room, all of which have recently undergone extensive refurbishment.

    Alternatively it is possible to erect a marquee at the front of the house connecting through the front door, giving you greater flexibility for numbers and the opportunity to have a band and dance floor.

    Events and Functions

    Lunch and Dinner Parties with Style and Elegance

    Enjoy a magical country house experience by bringing your family, friends or colleagues to lunch or dinner by candlelight, eating off silver and surrounded by antiques. Choose your own menu and then sit down and enjoy. Your gourmet meal will begin in the Drawing Room with canapés in front of a roaring log fire, continue in the main Hall and end with coffee and chocolates. You may bring your own wine with you. Parties of 8 - 22 are catered for at £35 per head for lunch or £40 for dinner. 

    Team Building Exercises

    Casterne Hall is situated in a remote spot above the Manifold Valley offering almost unlimited opportunities to stretch and develop your workforce. There is a stunning network of footpaths leading from the house across the hills and dales surrounding it.

    Focus Groups

    Focus groups can make use of the Hall, Oakroom and Drawing Room to reflect and brainstorm, following or prior to a home-cooked lunch or dinner.







    Walking Groups

    Casterne Hall is the ideal place to base yourself and your group of fellow walkers whilst you explore the magnificent scenery of the surrounding area. Both Dovedale and the Manifold Valley are a stone's throw away. Why not start your day with a hearty breakfast or finish with a homemade cream tea!

    Birthday Parties/Dances

    The Manifold Showground to the north of the house is the ideal setting on which to erect a marquee. Or how about being adventurous and opt for a yurt or tepee? In this beautiful and remote spot with magnificent views, it will be a night to remember!

    Leave Ilam going N towards Stanshope, passing the village school on your right. Take the first lane on the left just out of the village. Go past a lodge and over a cattle grid and continue STRAIGHT ON past a No Through Road sign up the steep drive to the house.
