A team of seven Acclimbatize staff were out after work on Friday for a nocturnal excursion into Lathkill Head Cave. With a deservedly tough reputation the Lathkill system was until relatively recently a serious proposition for all subterranean explorers. The resurgence entrance (the mouth of the cave from which an underground watercourse resurfaces) gives the best indicator of streams levels underground. In winter months the cave can be out of bounds continuously. Even in...

Peak Mountaineering was formed by Paul Lewis to provide high quality mountain activities and training. We believe in the personal touch and most of our courses are still run by Paul. We keep group sizes small and course itineraries extremely flexible to ensure your objectives are achieved whether it's a single day or a full month. Working in this way provides better value for money as you won't waste time waiting for others to do things you already know – or don't want to do! When Paul isn't available to work with you himself he...

It seemed that events were conspiring against us, in our bid to complete a Titan to Peak Cavern through trip. Getting all the logistics in place to attempt what is probably the ultimate caving trip in the Peak District are almost as complex as the trip itself. The keys enabling access to the Titan shaft are only loaned under a set of strict criteria, understandably so, this is after all the biggest natural shaft in Britain at 465ft. The name not only reflects the shaft size but also the dogged determination of...

Having retreated (due to heavy water) from a previous attempt to descend Titan, our team reconvened in the warmth of a beautiful spring morning for a second attempt. All the arrangements were made for a late exit from Peak Cavern and a team of willing volunteers to retrieve our ropes the following day. The underground journey went without incident except to say that the crawl between the top of Block Hall, a vertical section of cave (negotiated by a set of fixed ropes) and the White River...

The Blue John Cavern in the Peak District is a series of caverns considered to be the finest range in Great Britain. Our Cavern Tours are of immense educational interest showing clearly how the caverns are formed in limestone strata and how the limestone itself had much earlier been formed by the deposits on the floors of great oceans which have long since receded, as the fossilised remains of marine animals now show. The Cavern is well illuminated by electric lighting. Very comprehensive planning was necessary here to...
