Pubs In Hope

Hope village was mentioned in the Domesday Book as having both a priest and a church. The present church, dedicated to St Peter dates from around the 13th century. It contains ancient memorials bearing the symbols of forest officers, for this area was once part of a Royal Hunting Reserve. These officers were known as Woodroffes, a term which survived as a family name figuring in local affairs for 500 years or more and which is perpetuated in the Woodroffe Arms pub.  This is just one of the pubs in Hope, which is popular with both locals and visitors alike.  Hope has changed quite a bit since the Woodruffes were in charge and the arrival of the Hope Valley railway put Hope in the map for commuters for Sheffield and Manchester.
