The Retreat…on Butts Road is a thoughtfully converted, upside-down, end-of-terrace holiday cottage which has a traditional feel to it and both the living room and bedroom have a Juliet balcony with views over the Amber Valley. The Retreat was fully renovated in early 2013 and released as a holiday cottage in May of that year by the owners who live next door at Prestwood.
Sat in the centre of the beautiful conservation village of Ashover with an award-winning CAMRA pub just 150yrds away. One of the prettiest villages in Derbyshire, with a 15th Century Church, Ashover won the Calor Village of the Year competition in 2005.It has been said that the village is home to a couple of ghosts, including the Laughing Cavalier who haunts the Black Swan, and that arrows for the Battle of Agincourt were made here!
The village was important to the lead mining and quarrying industries and was also home to the stocking frame knitting industries, but little of that remains.
Today, Ashover is valued for the beautiful countryside that surrounds it and better known for the Ashover Show in August and the Ashover Festival in September.

We have just returned from a 3 night ‘Retreat’ for our first anniversary and didn’t want to leave! It is a beautifully renovated, quirky upside down cottage with fabulous views. Everything is finished to perfection and there wasn’t anything that wasn’t provided. We had planned on visiting Matlock but after arriving on friday, we didn’t use the car again. The information pack in the cottage has some detailed walks in it of which we did two, despite a bit of little drizzle (and a whole lot of mud!) The views you get on your way round are just beautiful. We ate at the two local pubs ‘The Black Swan’ and ‘The Old Poet’s’ and both were lovely. The live band on the friday was great and the locals were very friendly. Our hosts, Ian and Elaine couldn’t have been more accomodating. Full of information and leaving a lovely welcome pack on arrival. You could spend hours just watching the birds and squirrels feasting on their seeds and nuts from the 6 feeders on the tree in the garden of Ian and Elaine’s house, all from the comfort of the sitting room. It really is a little bit of heaven away from the hustle and bustle of city life. We will definitely be recommending to family and friends and will be back for our second anniversary (if we can wait that long!)
