WHY PILATES?
Learn to improve your movement patterns… by identifying and activating the correct muscles, we can move optimally and reduce aches & pains. Pilates is fantatsic for postural correction, improving stability, strength, balance and flexibility. Many professional athletes choose Pilates to strengthen their core and improve performance. Lessons learned on the mat will help you excel or rehabilitate.
WHAT IS PILATES?
Pilates is a series of exercises and breathing technique created by the German born Joseph Pilates in the 1920s. His method aims to improve posture and strengthen the core – the powerhouse of the body – which helps with balance and gives our limbs a solid base from which to push, lift and perform dynamic movement.I teach Standing Pilates and Mat Pilates for all age groups and specialisms. Most bodies can achieve in a Pilates class. I have lots of experience in 1-to-1 teaching and group settings at adapting Pilates to the individual. Most exercises can be broken down or layered together to increase or decrease difficulty.
Pliates in Bakewell
We begin every Bakewell Pilates class by aligning the spine and establishing correct posture, followed by an exploration of lateral breathing (a Pilates breathing technique) and learning to engage the core and pelvic floor. We warm up the joints and then enter the main sequence which is different every week. We always do core work, and usually legs, hips and back strengthening on the mats.
Pilates movements are slow, considered and graceful (as much flow and grace as we can muster!). This challenges the stabilising muscles and postural muscles in the body – helping us to move with more co-ordination and ultimately reducing the strain on larger, overworked muscle groups and consequently reducing aches and pains.
The Bakewell Pilates group is characterized by its enthusiasm for every Pilates challenge. I use a variety of equipment and teach a range of Pilates movements: standing, seated and lying. Adaptations are given for each exercise to match the individual’s capabilities, so they can progress at their own pace. Special care is taken to exercise in the best posture, allowing us to safely strengthen targeted muscles whilst protecting problem areas such as the lower back and neck. I continue to see excellent progress and participants enjoy discovering and enhancing their physical boundaries.
