Country Houses in the Peak District

The Peak District is home to some of the most impressive and historic country houses in the UK. These grand estates offer a glimpse into centuries of British heritage, stunning architecture, and beautifully kept gardens – all set against the backdrop of the area’s rolling hills and picturesque landscapes.

Chatsworth House

Often described as the jewel of the Peak District, Chatsworth House is the seat of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. With over 30 rooms open to the public, an extensive art collection, and a garden that spans 105 acres, it’s a must-visit. The estate also includes a working farmyard and adventure playground, making it ideal for families.

Haddon Hall

A beautifully preserved medieval manor house, Haddon Hall sits above the River Wye near Bakewell. With its atmospheric rooms, romantic gardens, and centuries-old tapestries, it’s often used as a filming location for period dramas. The house has a unique charm that transports visitors back in time.

Lyme Park

Located on the edge of the Peak District, Lyme Park is a National Trust property surrounded by moorland, formal gardens, and a deer park. The house itself is a striking mix of Elizabethan and Victorian styles and is perhaps best known for its role in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

Renishaw Hall

While just outside the Peak District boundary, Renishaw Hall is worth the short trip. Home to the Sitwell family for over 400 years, the house boasts beautiful Italianate gardens and an impressive collection of art and historical artefacts. Guided tours offer insight into the house’s fascinating history.

Tissington Hall

Located in the charming village of Tissington, this Jacobean mansion has been home to the FitzHerbert family since it was built in the early 17th century. The Hall is still a private residence but opens its doors to visitors at selected times throughout the year. The village itself is also well worth a wander.
