Fly Fishing Hints & Tips

Fly Fishing in Derbyshire & the Peak District can be very good in the month of June. The Mayfly will still be around in the early part of the month to induce the Trout to give the vicious takes that are so exciting to the Fly fisher. This will gradually subside and then the fish will be well fed & far more choosey about what they are prepared to take.

Blue Winged Olive

The Blue Winged Olive (BWO) is a bread and butter fly at this time and always worth having in your fly box. Remember you will need to represent it as both Nymph & Dry to make the most of your fishing.  There are many versions of the dry that I use: BWO, Parachute Olive, Orange Quill, and Sherry Spinner to mention a few, but for me the Pheasant Tail Nymph is the finest version of the Nymph. A nymph fished just subsurface in a hatch can be lethal.

June is a great month for the Caddis or Sedge Flies and you need to have a few representations with you: CDC Sedge, G& H Sedge, and Klinkhammer are some of my favourites.  Fished in the evening when the natural fly is on the water the Sedge patterns can give excellent sport.

Don’t forget some Terrestrial Patterns as the Daddy Longlegs is about & the Greenfly will start to appear on the Trout’s menu. It would be rude of me not to mention the Double Badger which is a true Derbyshire Fly and can be very effective when Fly-fishing in Derbyshire, the Peak District & South Yorkshire.

As always I wish you tight lines!
