The Packhorse Inn

The Packhorse Inn, a historic pub is regarded as one of the best in the Peak District. Situated just off the Monsal Trail, the pub is surrounded by some of the most striking scenery the Peaks have to offer. Settle down by the open fire or linger outside on sunny days to enjoy real ales and tasty food, locally sourced by the landlord. Muddy boots, kids and dogs are all welcome.

Drink
Serving a wide range of real ales and lagers, the Packhorse Inn is a fantastic place to come for a good honest pint. Theakston’s is a regular feature, and local beers include cask ales from the Thornbridge Brewery at Ashford-in-the-Water, and Moravka, a Czech style lager brewed at the Taddington Brewery, Blackwell.

The wine list is concise, but effective, with the usual suspects offered by the glass or the bottle. A full range of spirits is also available as are tea and coffee.

Eat
Seriously fresh, seriously local, seriously good.
As most people in Derbyshire can’t walk 50 feet without encountering a cow, a pig, or a sheep, we didn’t think it made a lot of sense to get them from anywhere else. The smoked trout, chicken, and salmon all come from the Derbyshire Smokery at Flagg.

Cheeses found throughout the menu are local delicacies, such as Hartington Stilton and Sage Derby. Bakewell provides the bread, and of course, the Pudding.

Join us for a Roast Dinner on Sunday or a uniquely Derbyshire Ploughman’s lunch during the week. As all ingredients are locally sourced, the menu is apt to change based on what is available. During the summer months, we host a ‘Pig Shack BBQ’ outside, using delicious Derbyshire pork.

Set on the outskirts of Little Longstone, just a short walk from the stunning views at Monsal Head, the Packhorse is ideally located for those staying in the lovely holiday cottages in the area. We are also a short drive from some of the more widely known attractions of the Peak District, so whether you’ve spent the morning fly fishing or touring Chatsworth House or Haddon Hall, you will have no trouble making it to the Packhorse in time for lunch.

The ever popular Thursday night quiz provides participants with giggles, winners with wine, and charities with funds. For the price of £1, comedy quizmaster Gawney will amaze you with how little you know, and then make up for it with the ‘top dollar items’ offered as prizes for the bonus picture round. Last year we raised £923 for the County Air and Ambulance Trust, and hope to do as well this year for the Ashgate Hospice.

The Packhorse Inn has been a welcome stop for the refreshment of weary travellers since 1787. Formerly two miners’ cottages, the pub sits on an old Packhorse route that runs from Chesterfield through Baslow and Hassop to Little Longstone and Great Longstone before climbing up towards the Monsal Head to join an ancient Roman Portway.

The pub sits off what is known today as the Monsal Trail, a disused railway line joining Bakewell to Monsal Head that is a popular route for family walks, runners, and cyclists. To the other side of the pub is another public footpath that runs up Longstone Edge and on to Wardlow.
