DISCOVER BUXTON’S HIDDEN ‘WONDER’.
Poole’s Cavern is found deep beneath the limestone hills on the edge of the historic Derbyshire spa town of Buxton. This secret underground world once echoed to the sound of a glacial river that scoured the rock for millions of years. Everywhere Spectacular crystal stalactites and stalagmites adorn the vast chambers.
Over 3000 years ago, cave dwellers sheltered in the chambers. Romans worshipped and traded here and legend tells of a medieval outlaw, Poole, who sought refuge in the cave with his treasure. Archaeologists have discovered thousands of remains many of which are on display in the Visitor Centre.
An attraction since the 16th century and described as one of ‘The seven wonders of the Peak’. Visitors are escorted in comfort and safety by expert guides who will unfold the fascinating story of the cavern’s history, myths and legend.
Our brand new visitor centre and cavern café offers tasty meals, drinks and snack. There is also new children’s play area and picnic area. Our new Stalactite Rock shop has an amazing collection of rocks, minerals, gemstones, fossils and jewellery from around the world.
Come along to see our new Hidden world exhibition and discover how the Peak District would have looked 350 million years ago.
Above ground complete your day and take a stroll through Buxton Country Park, 100 acres of beautiful sheltered woodland, to Solomon’s Temple viewpoint with commanding views of the Peak District from the summit of Grin Low at 1400 feet above sea level.
For the more adventurous have a go at swinging through the tree tops on Our Go Ape high wire adventure course the only one of its kind in the Peak District.
We are open from March to October every day from 9.30 until 5pm and tours begin every 20 minutes. Winter openings are weekends 9.30 until 4pm and weekdays at set times, contact us or check our website for times and special events through the year.
