Formerly known as The Shoulder of Mutton. In 1850 a soldier was accused of not paying for a drink and taken to a tree outside the cemetery and flogged. The ‘regulars’ felt this to be unjust and deserted the inn.In an attempt to dissociate the inn from this event the name was changed to The Swan. The Shoulder was first recorded in 1811.
