Village Aid is the Peak District’s international development charity. Based in Bakewell for the past 25 years, we believe in people working together in partnership. We work with partners in West Africa supporting them to deliver programmes focusing on: Education and Learning, Securing Livelihoods and Advocacy and Justice. Our programmes give young people in disadvantaged rural communities the opportunity to leave the poverty they live in permanently. In Bakewell and the Peak District we work to raise awareness of global issues. We have a successful schools programme, Hands UP for Village Aid, that is built on the belief that young people in the Peak District have a critical, active role to play in the fight against poverty and inequality.
Who are we?
Village Aid are the Peak District’s international development charity and have been based in Bakewell for the past 25 years. We want to live in a world where people in Africa enjoy a peaceful society, a prosperous economy and a healthy environment.
What do we do?
For the past 25 years we have been working closely with locally-based partners supporting them to deliver projects in rural areas of Africa. Each project is slightly different because it is led by the community, and responds to the specific needs and issues of that community. Often our work involves activities such as supporting farmers to develop more sustainable farming techniques and produce more nutritious food, or improving water sources so people are less at risk of disease. We also support people to learn new skills and access funding so they can start their own businesses, create income and improve many aspects of their lives.
We have a successful schools programme, Hands UP which delivers global education workshops in local schools. Hands UP is built on the belief that young people in the Peak District have a critical, active role to play in the fight against poverty and inequality.
Where do we work?
We currently have projects in Cameroon, Ghana and The Gambia and new partnerships in Nigeria, Senegal and Guinea. As an initiative of larger organisation United Purpose we are able to reach even more communities across countries in Africa.
Why support us?
Supporting Village Aid is the best way to connect with rural communities in Africa, and to see the difference your support is making. We will keep you updated about the people we are working with so you always feel connected to our projects, our approach and the difference that your support brings to the communities that need it most.
