Win Hill is one of the few hills in the Peak District that has a distinct summit. From the top, on a clear day you can see some of the best views that the Peak District has to offer. Looking to the north and north east you have panoramic views over Ladybower Reservoir and to the hills and moorland beyond. To the south and south east you have amazing views over the Hope Valley. Looking west you can see down the line of the hill to Hope Cross and to Lose Hill.
There are several ways to approach Win Hill. Our favoured route is from Hope station, through Aston and up the hillside to Thornhill Carrs, then through the plantation to the summit which stands at 462 metres above sea level. This is a good point at which to debate whether you believe the local legend of how Win Hill and Lose Hill across the valley got their names! From there we walk along the broad ridge to Hope Cross, an ancient stone sign post which has been there since 1737, then down through pine woods to the side of Ladybower Reservoir.
The second half of our walk takes us up into the hills again of Bridge-end Pasture and Crook Hill for more amazing views, and then on lower level countryside road and paths back to Hope for a well-deserved cup of tea and a cake in an excellent local café.
This full day walk is about 12 miles and involves approx. 600 metres of ascent.
