Winter climbing scene in the Peak District.

Bouldering in the Peak
Winter brings its own special conditions to the Peak. Whilst it may be too cold for all but the hardiest (daftest?) of people getting roped up for the Grit or Lime, there are plenty of opportunities to get out between the snow showers. Bouldering is a really popular branch of climbing, which involves climbing boulders up to around 4 or 5 metres in height, although some ‘Highball’ problems can be much higher. This hopefully explains all of the climbers walking around in duvet jackets and large pads on the back.  The problems range from easy ‘ladders’ to difficult technical test pieces.

Some of the best venues of bouldering include Stanage Plantation and Curbar.  Both have stunning views, a huge variety and range of problems and road side access. Although they can get busy during peak times the atmosphere is generally really relaxed and friendly.

Friendly banter between mates is often as much fun as the climbing itself!

If you want to try Bouldering indoors you can also try the Climbing Works, Edge or Foundry climbing wall or the Matrix at the University. All offer excellent facilities to get strong for that Spring project.

So what are you waiting for? All you need is a pair of second hand rock shoes, a warm coat and some chalk and you can have a top afternoon out with your mates. Save up for a pad and you are set for some higher ‘problems’. What more can you ask for?
